Yes for real ! How do you become one ? If you are the legend who has wondered about this or know anyone who has, you are in the right place ! There are many of us out there who have not yet gone out and ordered a nice and warm cup of joe on a cold winter morning because we simply did not know enough about coffee. Better stick to your normal tea routine and get a cup of what you are used to rather than being a target for unwarranted swearing over the typical tall-venti-grande jargon at your local "friendly" coffee shop. No ! Snap out of it.

We have designed BeanFly to be your wingman in this confusing world of coffee. Life used to be so simple once upon a time, and so was coffee, if we are being honest with you ! So lets wage a war from the comfort of our couch against all the jargon and start a revolution. Too much diversion, so lets dive right into it !
Anywhere you go in the world, coffee literally anywhere, a coffee at a cafe usually means, water, coffee and milk. Do delve too much into science, this article isn't targeted towards smart people or coffee nerds as they are already good at figuring things out and probably know everything that there is to know about coffee. So where were we - coffee, water and milk. The various proportions of these three decide the most common coffees out there. Thats it. Yes literally that is all you need to know. Maybe one more thing - sometimes the texture of the milk also allows you to come up with fancier names like - the Flat White, Capuccino. Just in case you switched off at texture - It means how foamy is your milk in most cases.
So now you know what coffee really means to the person who is supposed to take your order at the local coffee shop. Add hot / cold keywords to your coffee and you probably covered of 94% of their coffee menu.
So back to the basics - Coffee, Water and Milk. Here in New Zealand you would mostly get a menu based on an espresso shot. What is an espresso shot ? It is the smallest quantity and the cheapest coffee you can get at the cafe. You might consider it as the most basic building block of the other coffees that your cafe sells. Majority of the cafes in NZ would use an espresso machine to make their coffees (barring a few speciality ones) which makes the espresso shot the most fundamental building block of the fancy names you hear. The foundation baby !

So a single espresso shot is 30ml (fondly called a short black) and a double espresso shot is 60ml of coffee and water. Very bitter both of them for newbies but very strong and flavour packed indeed if you get to know them better ! Definitely not something you should start off with as a person who has never had coffee, unless you want to become a person who will never have coffee : P So stay strong and resist the temptation of cheap prices and go for something with milk. Our recommendation would be a Cafe Latte or simply Latte which has a decent quantity of milk poured over a double shot of espresso and in some cases a single shot. Either way you would get a good balance to kick you date with coffee off on a good note. Make sure you add sugar if you are the type who likes their drinks on the sweeter side. Two small bags of normal sugar are usually enough for humans who like their hot coffees sweet but some do need three. If you would like your coffee super foamy (its milk foam btw, do not get ideas) go for a cappuccino which is a nice soft coffee with foamy milk on top of your espresso shots. Flat white, what is it really ? If you would like something with a balanced texture between latte and cappuccino, then Flat White is your thing !
Ok ! I hope this is enough information to get you started. If you are not a coffee person chances are you might not make it through any more lines that I might write so best to keep it short : P Hope this has given you the confidence to go out there and place you order confidently and know what you are actually ordering. Soon you might get good at this and start ordering a long black - Wait what ? - Yes that would mean you would only have hot water added over your espresso shot (usually a double), no milk !
